In recent years, Starlink, the satellite internet service provided by SpaceX, has garnered significant attention worldwide for its promise of high-speed internet access in remote and underserved areas. For residents of Jamaica, where internet connectivity might be limited or inconsistent in certain regions, Starlink offers a new and exciting option. This blog post delves into…

Starlink is nice but I wish they accepted payment in local currency. Foreign exchange is hard to come by in Trinidad.

Hmmm… well, yea, but if they did, they might have an higher exchange rate than your bank, which would have resulted in you paying more. E.g. Amazon’s exchange rate tend to be more NCB and Scotia exhange rate for JMD. Both banks recommend to do the transactions in USD.

is there a list of certified instalation technicians in Jamaica for Starlink?

Not sure, but I think its an easy installation.

I read the post but it doesn’t say how much to expect to pay customs for clearance. Also what if I got the mobile option would I still need to instead it

As Oshane said, it’s an easy install however if you’d like to mount it permanently somewhere such as your rooftop, you should look for a rooftop specialist to do that.

The fee from Starlink takes into consideration the customs fee so you’ll have nothing additional to pay. Also if you go for the mobile option you don’t need to install it.

Nice article. Well written, and simplified.
I am trying to order starlink for Jamaica, but puzzlingly, the availability map for the rural arras of jamaica is now saying, coming soon.

What about ordering for one area of availability in jamaica and actually setting up and use in the area that is bloccked out.
And what does unavailability/coming soon means? Is this not a satelite Internet. And the whole country was available before, what gives? What is going on with Starlink in Jamaica?
Its the rural parts that needs it the most!!

It’s interesting that you said that because Starlink launched in Jamaica in 2022, aiming to provide high-speed internet, especially in rural areas. Initially, the whole country had access, but now some areas show as “unavailable” or “coming soon.” This happens when demand exceeds network capacity, so Starlink pauses new activations until they can expand.

Trying to order from an available area and setting it up elsewhere isn’t a great idea—Starlink ties service to the registered address, and using it outside that zone might not work well.

The good news? They’re adding more satellites and improving capacity. If you’re in a blocked-out area, keep checking Starlink’s availability map or look into temporary alternatives until they expand coverage.

Thinking about it a bit more and doing a bit of research, it seems like you can change your Starlink service address, but there are some conditions:

  1. Check Availability – You can only move your service to an area where Starlink has capacity. If your new location is marked as “Unavailable” or “Coming Soon,” you may need to wait for expansion.

  2. Update in Your Account – Log into your Starlink account, go to “Manage” → “Service Address”, and enter the new location.

  3. Portability Option – If you’re moving temporarily, you can enable “Portability” in your account, which lets you use Starlink in different locations. However, this costs extra and doesn’t guarantee priority service.

Therefore, I guess you can get it and use it elsewhere until u have it available in your area. It’s best to reach out to them and find out before you do so. Let us know the answer

I think this is doable.
